Local charity to improve young peoples personal safety and confidence is successfully launched in Milton Keynes

A new charity has been born in Milton Keynes with a simple objective to provide 25,000 young people with a proven FREE life skills course. After a year of planning, the Young People are our Future charity had a successful launch on Sunday 2nd December at Shenley Brook End school.

The YPAOF Team

Young People are our Future is modelled on the Governments Big Society concept and encourages all aspects of the community to work together to benefit local young people.

Project leader Gary Payne explains more: "It is clear that many young people are growing up without the core values that a majority of people take for granted such as knowing the difference between right and wrong and understanding the word respect. YPAOF allows young people to experience a journey, which will see them receive FREE training in a proven life skills development course. This course is designed to increase their personal safety, improve their ability to assess and void bullying incidents, provides them with more confidence, good communication skills and helps them to develop a positive belief system, enabling them to achieve great things. Once a child completes the course they are encouraged to participate in a variety of FREE workshops in sport, dance, music and the arts to enhance their new skills. This is a great way of improving their social interaction skills and provides local clubs and groups with a great opportunity to engage with young people that ordinarily would not have the scope to mix with. Finally, young people over 14 years of age will receive employability skills such as voice projection training, presentation skills, creating a pitch etc."

The charity has received a lot of support from the local community with volunteers lining up to become one of the 120 life skills coaches being trained by the YPAOF team.

Local schools are starting to appreciate the value of the project, and with 60 schools being offered a FREE Life Skills train the trainer course for their teachers, reaching young people across the city will be more achievable.

Gary went on to explain that he and the YPAOF team feel that the business community have an important part to play in this forward thinking community project. "Businesses across the city have an opportunity to give back to the communities they serve by supporting the charity. Remember this project is FREE so what a great employee incentive as companies can help spread the word by offering access to the project to the families of their employees."
This message is certainly getting out there as Home Retail Group, John Lewis, Jurys Inn and Energie Gyms have already demonstrated their support for the charity.

The first YPAOF project day is being held on Sunday 16th December at the Oakgrove Leisure Centre between 12 - 4pm. Young people will receive the 2 hour life skills seminar followed by free workshops in football, dance and martial arts.

Further information on the project and how to register for FREE places onto the event at Oakgrove can be found at the charities web site. www.youngpeopleareourfuture.org

Companies start to back local children’s charity

A local charity set up to improve the confidence, safety and opportunities for young people has been supported by two of Milton Keynes largest companies.

Young People are our Future is a community project that will educate 25,000 local young people in some key life skills that will positively affect them throughout their lives and increase their chance of getting a job when they leave school.
Young people experience three phases within the project, starting with an education in a proven life skills course designed to improve their communication and presentation skills, discipline, behaviour, personal safety and much more.
Once armed with these important skills, they are invited into a wide variety of FREE workshops where they will get to enhance these skills and get to socially interact with other within their community. These workshops will cover a number of themes including a range of sporting activities, dance, music, drama, singing and art.
Finally, those aged 14 years +, are invited into employability workshops run by professional trainers. CV writing, Mock Interviews, Voice projection training and much more will be covered.
The enthusiasm of local volunteers has been overwhelming, which has led to two local companies getting involved. The Home Retail Group and John Lewis have both demonstrated their support for the project.
The Home Retail Group have donated £20,000 worth of equipment and resources enabling the project to provide their unique services within professional surroundings.
John Lewis have selected Young People are our Future as one the charities they will be supporting under their Community Matters initiative.
This scheme allows John Lewis customers to support the project, by depositing a green token they will receive each time they shop into the Young people are our Future box situated in the “Let’s Eat” restaurant within CMK.

The projects founder, Gary Payne said “ This is a wonderful opportunity for the community of Milton Keynes to work together to provide our young people with the skills they require to become the next generation of successful community and business leaders. This project will reduce poor discipline in schools, bullying statistics, anti-social behaviour and business related crime. In the year of the Olympics, the project will be a great opportunity to get young people participating in physical activities to increase their health and wellbeing”
The Young People are our Future project will meet the following targets:
  • 25,000 young people will be positively affected by this project
  • 120 local people will be trained as life skills coaches for the project
  • 60 local schools will receive the life skills training FREE within the project
  • 100 local young people will be developed in junior life skills coaches
The project is due to be deployed from September 2012.
If you would like to volunteer as a project team member, get your school involved or are in a position to sponsor the project, please contact us through the web site.

Young People are our Future project gets off to a great start

Wednesday 23rd May was the date, Home Retail Group HQ in CMK was the venue for the launch of the Young People are our Future project.

A group of invited guests including various departmental heads from MK council, representatives from local companies and a wonderfully diverse bunch of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds joined the YPAOF team and its founder Gary Payne at a presentation designed to inspire and motivate the local community.

Despite a beautiful evening, which could of easily became an easy distraction for many, the hospitality suite was full to the rim, bursting with enthusiasm and intrigue.

As Gary shared his vision with the group the simplicity of the project started to be appreciated by those attending. Off course, nothing is that simple and this initial response soon turned into a number of questions relating to the complexity of getting numerous local groups to work together.

The most common statement of the event was "This is very ambitious"

"Ambitious it is" said Gary. If we are going to make a real and lasting difference we need to set the bar high and attempt to positive affect the lives of thousands of local young people.

He went on to say "In every community their are the skills, enthusiasm, drive and resources to achieve some amazing things, however very rarely do people come together to tap into these unique features within the community and local people suffer as a consequence".

As a direct result of the launch, the Young People are our Future project is proud to boast a growing group of 36 volunteers (In just a few days), support from many departmental heads within the local authority and from local clubs/groups and companies.

Jurys Inn and Home Retail Group HQ were so impressed with the project and the response from those attending they increased their support by providing the facilities and resources to develop a profesional training program for the volunteers.

What next - Well YPAOF is well into phase two of its development and will be starting it volunteer training program in just three weeks time - We want a small army of volunteers to benefit from this training and are continually looking for passionate and driven people to join the team - check out http://www.youngpeopleareourfuture.org/GetInvolved.aspx

We are closing in on some potential options to provide the project with a venue for MK. With a little luck and some local kindness we are seeking to fill one of the many empty warehouse facilities within MK so that we can create a lasting community spirit within what will become the YPAOF HQ.

Local authorities and businesses have locations across the city that can easily be utilised for a great community initiative, so if you can help, get in contact.

We are launching the sponsor a child initiative in the first week of June, Where we are asking individuals and companies within the local community to donate just £3.50 to sponsor a child to experience the whole project>

1: They will receive a full life skills training course
2: They will have access to a wide variety of FREE activities across the city
3: They will experience a unique employability course designed to help young people get into work

The sponsor a child initiative is will be promoted to local companies throughout June in the hope that like VW their employees can each sponsor a child. It is hoped that the money raised through this initiative will provide not only 25,000 local young people with access to the project but will also enable us to start the project outreach work where we want to deploy the project nationwide.

If you work in a company and can are willing to represent the YPAOF project, we would love to hear from you so that we can get this great employee initiative up and running successfully.

Well, it is that time of year when the Government turns its attention to the youth related problems again in an attempt to appease the growing frustration within communities up and down the country. Or is it that they want to be seen to be doing something to stop any designs on another destructive riot.

Parental classes for everyone - Great idea until we realise that those parents who do not care for their children will never attend these classes.

Lets get rid of ASBO's as they take too long to administer and bring in a new system, which requires 5 people to report an anti-social incident before the police step in and do something about it. Most of the people I speak to who unfortunately have to deal with anti-social behaviour around them daily might ring the Police initially but getting them to commit to a report will be very difficult as they fear intimidation and possible violence against them if they are seen to be standing up to these idiots.

I will give the people in their ivory towers respect for continually finding ways, which on paper sound so promising but in reality will not make much of a difference in the lives of those that really need change to happen.

We know that a majority of young people are good, honest, law abiding citizens who represent their communities well. We also know that it is a minority of young people who for a number of reasons have fallen onto a slippery slope that leads them to become irritants in society.

It gets under my skin, when all I here about are initiatives to enhance the opportunities of the minority and very little to encourage and reward the majority for being nice human beings.

Youth crime costs this country £1.2 billion a year and this figure is going to keep increasing.

I am a great believer that through education and concentrating on the majority, we can and will inspire the minority to appreciate the benefits of changing their habits to become decent, successful human beings.

Young People are our Future is a project that does just this. Designed to educate, inspire and motivate, this project is a cost effective solution to many of the problems young people face today.

Young people are taught some key life skills to increase their understanding of right and wrong, respect, their personal safety, communication skills and how to set and achieve goals.

Numerous clubs / groups within the community work together to provide these young people with a wide spectrum of activities from sport to dance to singing.

Once a young person has been educated in some core values, and inspired by participating in a number of FREE local activities, they are invited to attend an employability course, where they are introduced to CV writing skills, mock interviews, presentation skills.

If we provide this simple to deploy project to thousands of young people, those that full into the minority category will quickly appreciate the benefits of conforming as they will be surrounded by proactive, driven and excited young people. - After most intelligent human being appreciate that positivity creates positivity.

Young People are our Future is not the answer to every youth related problem in society, but it is an important part of the puzzle, which is cost effective and simple to deploy.

Young People are our Future web site is launched and the project is ready to go

The Young People are our Future project is now up and running with the launch of the web site on May 1st 2012. This dynamic activity is the ultimate community project designed to educate, inspire and motivate young people with real life skills

You don't have to look far to either see images or hear stories of how the youth of today is causing local communities so many problems. Anti-social behaviour, ill discipline, no respect, massive youth unemployment.

Let's face it whilst the media is very good at pumping us with negative story after negative story, the simple facts are like in so many things it is the minority that is causing the problems for the majority.

We all know that a majority of young people are on the right tracks to growing up and becoming responsible, successful members of their communities.

What is worrying is that the minority group does seem to be getting bigger and if we are not careful will spiral out of control.

To tackle many of the youth related issues communities are experiencing the Government produced a wonderful concept called the BIG SOCIETY. Let's all work together to improve the opportunities young people have in order to become the best they can be.

Young People are our Future is the ultimate community project, which compliments the BIG SOCIETY initiative in every way possible. read on....

For the past few years I have dedicated myself to the development and deployment of a very successful life skills training course for young people. The course is designed to educate young people from 5 years + in a some practical and effective skills to increase their confidence, communication skills, ability to assess and avoid a potentially dangerous situation such as bullying and many more key skills.

I have recently set up a charity called "Young People are our Future". Together with a committee of 12 trustees representing several large companies including Jurys Inn, VW, Home Retail Group, John Lewis and Women & Work, we have developed the ultimate community project, which will initially positively affect the lives of 25,000 local young people in Milton Keynes and then will be mobilised across the country.

The project has some simple objectives:

1: Educate 25,000 young people in some real life skills
2: Provide 60 local schools with FREE life skills training
3: Develop 120 life skills coaches for the local community
4: Get 50 local clubs and groups representing a wide range of sports, music, dance, drama and art to provide FREE workshops for local young people to experience activities they would otherwise never experience
5: Provide a comprehensive employability training course to young people, where they get to learn from local professionals working within large companies

The benefits of this project are huge but the main ones to note are:

1: Young people will increase their safety and confidence
2: Young people will have access to activities they ordinarily would not have access to
3: We will reduce local anti-social behaviour statistics
4: We will reduce local business crime statistics
5: A community spirit will be developed, which will be supportive and caring

YPAOF is inviting potential volunteers to a FREE presentation we are running on May 23rd at Home Retail Group, Avebury Blvd, CMK - 18:00

WE NEED A SMALL ARMY OF VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY OF THIS PROJECT.

Community project designed to educate, inspire and motivate young people

Ask any person, why young people today act the way they sometimes do and you will be bombarded with an array of colourful answers. It is the parents, schools are failing them, the government has relaxed to many rules and they have no clear direction are all comments I often hear when attending events or visiting schools.
You do not have to look very far to see some shocking examples of young people creating havoc somewhere in their local community.
The media is always highlighting examples of a society, which in many ways has lost its way and often descends into chaos through the actions of a minority of young people and the lack of appropriate response from the authorities due to the fear of becoming politically incorrect.
As a country we openly embraced people from every corner of the globe, but in the process forgot to clearly define the rules that they must abide by in order to keep the great in Great Britain. As a result the core values that this country were built upon are being shaken to their roots as we try to appease the cultural differences of everyone that enters our shores.
Over many years these gigantic changes in the way we live, have and will continue to affect the development of young people in every community across the country.
In every household on every street, there are people screaming for clear direction, for a return to a sensible approach to living where we all abide by a strong set of core values and where we all respect them.
The are without doubt many advantages to having different cultures from around the world positively affecting our communities. Both this and future generations can benefit from the experiences and belief systems people bring to communities. Unfortunately, too much time is being spent on the negative aspects of cultural integration, which is naturally affecting young people growing up today.
In the last few months alone, I have witnessed the wonderful work of many individuals and groups who have a singular mission to bridge some of the damaging problems that exist within their communities. These people provide great opportunities for young people to learn and be inspired to become success stories.
Similar to the problem of people from different cultures not communicating and learning from each other, many of these individuals and groups operate on the same playing field. I provide a great service so I will ignore everyone else...
It seems to be to simplistic to suggest meeting in a central location and finding some common values and working practices so that young people in the community are given the best opportunity to become something special.
As a direct result of my frustration over the last few months, I thought it was appropriate to stop talking and do something about it.
The Young People are our Future project will utilise the skills an experience of the best service providers in Milton Keynes to enable young people to tap into every opportunity available to them with the singular objective of increasing their confidence and their belief system that anything is achievable with a positive mindset.

Young People will experience some key life skills designed to improve their ability to communicate professionally, set and achieve goals and provide them with the correct mental approach to become the best they can be.
These new skills will be used to inspire them to become creative and express their physical and mental abilities through the medium of film. Workshops will be available to young people where they will be taught how to turn their creative thoughts into reality.
Armed with a powerful and inspirational mind set and the knowledge of how to express themselves through film, young people will be encouraged to create wonderful projects involving music, dance, acting and much more.
Local service providers will provide workshops in singing, dancing, acting and every activity possible to continually encourage young people to become the best they can be.
The Young People are our Future project is a community initiative designed to engage promote and inspire local people to make positive changes in the way we educate young people.
Regardless of the the activity, the project will embrace any person or group who currently provide their services to young people and who want to be a part of a powerful and positive movement.
A 3rd Lens Productions spokesperson said “The intention for the workshops is to provide access to filmmaking to help young kids tap into their creativity.
In conjunction with Life Skills for Children, we hope to help kids feel more empowered, confident, and positive, and find a craft they can take to their own and have fun doing, with the prospect of potentially opening up a career path.
At the end of the experience, we hope to have cultivated a group of 50 youngsters who would then be in charge of their own creative productions within the broadcasting channel we are setting up for the project, as well as being the key volunteers who help to draw out the scheme for more young people to get involved in”.
At this point of the article some of you might be asking yourself - How is the problem highlighted at the beginning of the article being tackled by this project?
I am a great believer that good and constant communication is the key to solving all problems. Many of the problems society faces today is directly attached to a lack of positive communication.
This project will see young people from a wide spectrum of different cultures, belief systems and personal circumstances come together to learn a set of life skills, which will install a valuable set of core values that will benefit them for the remainder of their lives.
Whilst absorbing these important skills the filmography workshops will provide them with opportunities to communicate positively to those around them about a range of subjects that they are passionate about.
By bringing local groups together within the project we will be demonstrating to  young people the power of team work, positive communication and that regardless of your personal circumstances and cultural background we are all human and can celebrate the power of effective education together.
We have a reason to change the way we educate young people, we have a solution through the YPAOF project, so now we need the community to support this movement.
The business community will benefit from this project in a profound way as business related crime will fall, a new range of employee incentives where their families can be given the opportunities within the project can be initiated and the next generation of employees will have a set of life skills that will be beneficial to both the individual and the profits of the company.
Residents of the community will benefit from a reduction in anti-social behaviour and the fear associated to young people.
Parents will benefit from happier and safer children.
Schools will see an improvement in pupil behaviour, attendance and general discipline.
The question is - Can we afford not to do this project?
We need you, whether you are a parent, work in a school or company or own the company to back this project

Bullying is Devastating - But we do have a solution

Any parents of a child who has experienced bullying will tell you the most frustrating part of this period in their child’s life is the complete and overwhelming lack of control they have over the situation.

With so many different strands of bullying, it can be very difficult to identify the right solution to the problem.

To complicate issues further, many of the procedures in place to report and combat bullying are either ineffective or are so poorly managed the victim is often left unsupported, disillusioned and in the same place as before they reported the incident.

With the constant changes in technology the way in which people are bullied is continually getting more difficult to monitor, making the reporting of incidents even more complicated.

I have dealt with hundreds of parents who struggle to understand why it is so difficult to get to the root of their child’s bullying experience and deliver the appropriate punishment to the bullies.

So what are the main symptoms of bullying?

Whilst it is inappropriate to suggest that all victims suffer the same symptoms, research has clearly demonstrated that certain negative personality changes occur in a majority of young people.

Confidence and self esteem take a serious blow, which often leads to the individual becoming reclusive and avoiding participation in activities both at school and home. In more extreme cases, the negative affects of bullying can and often do include swift changes in mood (normally undirected anger) and self harming.

One of the most concerning aspects of working with young people who are experiencing a traumatic period of bullying is watching the people around the victim. I witness parents go through every emotion you can imagine just to try and come to terms with the situation in the first place. Once the anger and disbelief subsides from the initial shock of hearing about their child’s plight, they are then thrust into a roller coaster of emotions trying to be supportive, practical and logical.

I have in the last few months witnessed the ripple affect of negativity run through the parents and onto other family members, friends and even teachers who have daily interaction with the victims.

There is only one word to describe the overall negative affects of bullying - DEVASTATING

In my quest to provide victims and their families with every tool possible to address these bullying issues, I regularly provide information on websites where parents can research the many different ways others have used to deal with their bullying issues.

Unfortunately, many of the victims I regularly speak to have little confidence and self esteem so to expect them to take the time to visit web sites and investigate ways to improve their lives is often a step to far.

Most parents will openly admit that their children are more likely to accept information from another individual than through themselves leaving their child to find the motivation required to visit a web site. This is a step to far for many victims.

It is very clear that the devastation caused by bullying to the victim and their family creates such a huge psychological scar that is makes sense to provide young people with a set of simple skills to increase the chance of them avoiding becoming a victim to bullying in the first place.

If we provided a preventative measures education to every young person through the national curriculum we would save the tax payer millions of pounds and more importantly, the victim a huge amount of trauma that is associated to bullying.

Ironically there are many groups splattered around the country that are providing fantastic opportunities for local young people and their families to come to terms with the trauma and work as a team to support each other through their difficult time.

The problem is that a majority of these groups do not communicate with each other and therefore this splatter gun effect means only small pockets of young people benefit from the powerful services on offer.

Working in different schools on a regular basis, enables me to appreciate the true extent of poor communication that exists between teachers, schools and even local authorities.
Pick any school in the country and you will find a handful of parents who are distraught at the way their child’s ordeal has been dealt with.

So what is the long term damage caused by BULLYING?

It is no surprise that a good percentage of young victims to bullying under achieve academically and move into the scary world of adulthood and work with such a low level of confidence and self belief that they are already doomed to a life of half achievements.

All of us will know of at least one person who seriously lacks confidence or the communication skills to become the best they can be.

We have senior posts within every profession that are filled with people that are struggling internally as a direct result of being programmed incorrectly.

Think of the human brain as a computer and every experience we ever have, being software that programmes us to behave the way we do. It goes without saying that a child with a loving family, great education and positive role models will display an abundance of confidence, self belief, communication skills, positive body language and the ability to set and achieve goals regardless of their size.

On the other hand a child that experiences bullying, who witnesses the negative sides of the human race, who loses faith in those around them, who struggles to see the positive side of anything and who lives to get through the day is going to find it difficult as they grow. These children will constantly be at war with themselves, which unfortunately will affect every relationship they have albeit within their personal life or career.
In an ideal world every young person will have the kind of loving childhood that provides them with the tools to become the best they can be, however we are human beings and this is no more than a pipe dream.

What is the solution?

If there was a single magic button to cure this huge problem then I am sure some brainiac would have discovered it by now. Unfortunately until that time comes, we have to rely on education.
By fundamentally changing the way we educate all young people from 5 years + we will be able to provide the next generation with a powerful set of tools to achieve all that they want to. They will be programmed to think positively, to see the good in every situation, to belief in their own abilities to make positive lasting change in not only their lives but others to.

Their will develop an abundance of real life skills that will place them on the stepping stone of success - Confidence, Self Belief, Positive Communication & Body Language skills, The ability to Assess & Avoid a Bullying Situation.

Let’s take the responsibility of educating young people away from the many poor parents who themselves do not have the right programming to benefit their own children.
To the millions of parents that are doing a great job, we can support them by providing their children with a core set of values that any decent adult human being would acknowledge as being good education.

In the process of deploying a national strategy for developing these core life skills in every child we could establish an educational concept which has stood the test of time. “Kids teach Kids”
Let’s start installing some core values and belief systems into the minds of young people at 5 years of age and as these young people grow let’s enable them to pass their knowledge onto younger students coming through the educational system.

For reasons I can never get my head around, adults seem to complicate everything with bureaucracy and red tape. What is fundamentally a simple process is turned into a maze of confusion, which from my experience seems to delay progress and confuse the very people who created the maze in the first place.

If we kick-start a national deployment of real life skills training, young people themselves will keep it simple and make it very effective.

I am presently working with over 100 young people who have all suffered some form of bullying. Everyone of them has had a different response to the trauma, a different reaction from those around them and a different response from the people they have reported it to.

This group of 100 young people will cost the British tax payer millions of pounds over their life time unless we provide them with real life skills NOW.

The Life Skills for Children course is a simple and effective preventative measures education for young people to learn how to become the best they can be whilst staying SAFE. www.lifeskillsforchildren.co.uk
Give us just 1 minute to complete a survey - Click here

Once the young people have experienced real life skills and have completed the course, we work with their parents and teachers to make sure the positive programme we installed is maintained.
Working with Reactiv8 (www.reactiv8.org.uk) we provide young people with opportunities to further develop their confidence and self belief within structured work placements.

The Life Skills for Children project “Young People are our Future” is designed to educate, inspire and motivate children through the medium of filmography.
Together we can make a huge dent in the negative ball of bullying, but it requires us all to stand up and be counted - Parents, Teachers, Politicians - Everyone
